A local government TD has backed calls for the state to provide early years childhood education. SIPTU and the National Women's Council of Ireland believe it is one way of dealing with the crisis facing the sector. Some private providers have pulled out of the government's core funding model in order to increase their fees.
Cavan Monaghan Fianna Fail TD, Deputy Niamh Smyth backs a state run system. "I would agree that in the long-term I would like to see that the state would provide the early years childhood education setting as well," said Deputy Smyth. "It's a difficult tight rope because you have a lot of people who are running businesses."
