A local TD is seeking an end to current a planning exemption for IPAS accommodation.
Sinn Féin's Justice Spokesperson, Matt Carthy introduced The Repeal of Exempted Development Regulations Bill 2026 last week.
He believes that the exemption has been in place for too long, and that communities should have the ability to input on planning proposals in their area.
According to the TD, the exemption has facilitated the use of unsuitable buildings - vacant commercial buildings, old factories, office blocks.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Deputy Carthy has said that legislation currently allows for IPAS accommodation to be exempt from a minimal public engagement process.
He said that the situation has led to anger in communities that have been impacted.
Deputy Carthy said: "There is an exemption in place, that has been in place too long. Its a standard measure of any democratic system that communities should be able to input on planning proposals in the area they live.
"Legislation currently allows for IPAS to be exempt from a minimal public engagement process. This has led to anger, division, and frustration in many communities.
"Sinn Féin have introduced, through myself, and our housing spokesperson Éoin O'Broin, this piece of legislation that will ensure we have a little bit accountability about where IPAS facilities are located," he added.
