A local TD has slammed the Mercosur Trade Agreement, highlighting lower standards of beef in other countries.
Sinn Féin TD has claimed that the government failed to build a blocking majority to ensure that the trade deal did not get passed by the EU Commission.
Speaking on the Joe Finnegan Show this morning, Deputy Bennett noted the MEPs who voted against the deal going to the European Court of Justice this week.
She claimed that there are no controls in place in Mercosur countries, and said that the highest standards should be implemented in Irish beef.
Deputy Bennett believes that ordinary people want traceability in food.
She said: "The housewife as you say wants the farm to fork, and they want to know where the food has come from. Those standards are not implemented in Europe or in Brazil, where they intend to take the beef in.
"The Irish people are calling for better standards. We have good beef here. Do you want to eat something that is full of antibiotics, you don't know what its doing to your body, do you want to eat that?" Deputy Bennett added.
