Local TD criticises decision to reintroduce exam fees

Deputy Bennett warned that many families are already facing financial pressures and do not need this added stress.

Cavan-Monaghan TD Cathy Bennett has criticised the decision made by Education Minister Hildegarde Naughton to reintroduce exam fees for Leaving Certificate and Junior Cycle students.

State examination fees for Irish secondary schools are reinstated for 2026, costing €116 for the Leaving Certificate and €109 for the Junior Cycle per candidate, after it was paused as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Fees apply to students in school and medical card holders are exempt.

Deputy Cathy Bennett says Government are trying to "pull a fast one" by introducing these fees when the cost of living is at an all-time high.

Speaking to Northern Sound, Deputy Bennett said the decision to reintroduce exam fees is an "absolute disgrace."
