Sinn Féin spokesperson on Justice and Cavan Monaghan TD Matt Carthy has expressed alarm at the continuing rise in rents in Cavan and Monaghan
Cavan rents have risen by 4.1% to an average of €1409 a month while Monaghan rents have risen by 5.6% to €1340 a month in the year to March according to the latest Daft.ie rent report.
The local TD says the increases are putting rental accommodation out of reach for people, particularly young people.
According to Deputy Carthy, under Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael things are going from bad to worse, Renters need affordable rents, they need certainty, and they need security.
He says that the Government must introduce an emergency three-year ban on rent increases and put a full month's rent back into every private renters pocket.
