Tributes have been paid today at the Ballyjamesduff Municipal District meeting to Bernice Smith who is retiring from Cavan County Council.
Bernice has been an assistant Staff Officer for the Ballyjamesduff Municipal District and in total has worked with the local authority for 27 years.
Cllr Trevor Smith who is the Cathaoirleach of the local MD said Bernice was a person that nothing was ever a problem and wished her well in a long and happy retirement.
Cllr Winston Bennett said Bernice had been always professional, friendly and hardworking. He said it was a pity she couldn’t have stayed for another 10 years adding that she would be a hard act to follow.
Cllr Noel Connell praised her work ethic over the years and wished her a well and very happy retirement.
Cllr TP O’Reilly thanked Bernie for all the work she’s done over a long period of time and said she went above and beyond. He said that even if Bernice was off she was never off and was always contactable and in relation to her work he said it was evident she was very interested in helping the people of the area.
Cllr Philip Brady thanked her for assisting him through the years and said it was testament to her hardworking ethic that there was now two staff members taking over from her. He wished Bernice and her family well in a very long and happy retirement.
Cllr Shane P O’Reilly says Bernice was the mammy of the local office and would be greatly missed by the staff and councillors. He said she was always there to hear from the general public and more importantly she made sure they were heard. He said her finishing up was retirements gain and Cavan County Council’s loss.
