Man appears in court over serious Cavan hit and run

The 26-year-old was found in a wardrobe in his bedroom.

A 26-year-old man has appeared in court this morning charged in relation to a serious hit and run incident in Cavan Town that has left one man in an induced coma.

Dean Mannering, of 21 Laragh Crescent, Cavan Town was before Monaghan District Court over a number of alleged offences that occurred on the L1513, Drumlark in Cavan.

Mr Mannering has been charged with a number of offences that include dangerous driving, no insurance, failing to produce a driving licence, hit and run charges that include not offering assistance and not remaining at the scene of a collision.

Detective Garda Eamon McCann gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution.

During a contested bail application the court was told that Gardai have garnered a-lot of information surrounding the case so far.

Detective Garda McCann said that dash cam footage shows the vehicle that is allegedly driven by Mr Mannering being driven in a dangerous manner before the collision.

He told the court the vehicle in question mounted the footpath at Loreto Wood hitting a tree and then a female pedestrian who was on the footpath and wearing a hi-vis jacket at the time.

The vehicle then lost control and went into the centre of the road. The woman was brought to Our Lady of Lourdes in Drogheda where she had to undergo an operation.

While the passenger of the vehicle, Brendan Lee was left fighting for his life and had to be transferred from Cavan General Hospital to Beaumont Hospital where he remains in a critical condition in an induced coma.

It’s alleged that Mr Mannering fled the scene and went on the run for a week. The court was told how Gardai called to the home of Mr Mannering and when the property was searched the 26-year-old was found in a wardrobe in his bedroom. Gardai outlined a number of concerns to why they believed bail should not be granted.

BL Ms O’Brien for the accused called on the judge to give her a client an opportunity to be allowed take up bail on a number of strict conditions.

Inspector Damien Martin for the state said that Mannering has been given ample opportunities and he was objecting to bail. Judge Raymond Finnegan denied bail and remanded the accused to appear before Cavan District Court tomorrow the 26th of February.
