Fianna Fail Senator Robbie Gallagher has paid tribute to his former party colleague Mary Cunningham who died on Sunday.
The Monaghan Senator described the former Fianna Fail councillor as a “super character.”
Although the Clones woman stopped being a councillor a number of years ago, Senator Gallagher said this didn’t stop her being a “community person.”
He told Northern Sound: “Mary’s love for Clones and Co Monaghan shone through every time you heard her voice and she didn’t let her illness in recent years act as a barrier. She was a larger than life character who will be truly missed.”
Fianna Fail Minister Niamh Smyth also paid tribute to her former colleague Mary Cunningham.
Minister Smyth told Northern Sound: “Mary was a woman of huge integrity. A woman who was very articulate, very in tune and very much had her finger on the pulse of the issues of the day right up until her passing.
“Mary was a person who often rang me up about problems and issues but I was always struck at how Mary could articulate not just the problem itself but also offer ideas and solutions as to how the problem could be fixed.
“Mary was very passionate about people and a great listener who will be deeply missed by her family, the people of Clones and the Fianna Fail family.”
The Funeral Mass of the late Mary Cunningham will take place at the Sacred Heart Church, Clones at 11am tomorrow morning. Burial afterwards in Mount St Oliver's Cemetery.
