Sinn Féin TD for Cavan-Monaghan, Matt Carthy, paid tribute in the Dáil yesterday to the The Northern Standard newspaper.
He said news of the paper's closure has caused ‘huge shock’, and sought intervention from the government in the hopes of examining ‘whether there’s any possible avenue at all to save the Northern Standard newspaper’.
Deputy Carthy said for a generations, the Northern Standard has been a trusted local voice, having top class local journalists, photographers, and other staff.
He said It is hard to imagine Monaghan without the ‘Standard’. It has chronicled every significant event, celebration, tragedy and debacle that has happened in our county for the best part of two centuries.
“As a first step, he urged the Minister in the Dáil to examine whether the government can do anything at all to save the Northern Standard. Repeating that call to the Taoiseach and Tánaiste.
