A Monaghan GP has highlighted the importance of availing of the meningitis vaccination programme.
The HSE has confirmed today a case of meningitis in the Cork, however, the health authority says there is no link to the outbreak in the UK.
An outbreak in the Kent area has left a number of people in hospital and led to the deaths of two young people.
According to Dr Illona Duffy, this particular strain is classed as meningitis B.
Dr Duffy said after years of vaccinating other of forms of the infection, protection is now included against meningitis B as part of the baby vaccination programme.
In Ireland there has been 12 cases of meningitis B throughout the year, however this individual cases and not clusters.
Speaking on today's Joe Finnegan Show, Dr Duffy said "it's wonderful" to see how these vaccines have worked and how they have reduced cases.
