A local principal has highlighted the importance of online safety on Internet Safety Day.
Mr James Sherry of Secondary School in Monaghan Town said it's "unfortunate" that students now spend such a considerable amount of time on mobile devices.
As a result of this, he said it's vitally important that the whole school community of St Louis are fully aware of the dangers of the internet and social media.
The local school has a number of initiatives which focuses on online safety, particularly when it comes to social media and how students can protect themselves.
Mr Sherry referenced a recent Oireachtas meeting which heard how social media companies who are profiting greatly want to make young people addicted.
The local principal said it's all about teaching young people about the dangers around social media and how algorithms are there to help feed the addiction.
Speaking to Northern Sound, there are real dangers out there for young people, however it's important to educate students in order to help them make good choices.
Mr Sherry told Northern Sound: "Social media can cause anxiety and stress amongst girls and a fear of being left out, or that they're missing out on something if they're not on social media. it is very difficult for parents to manage their child’s social media use but it's so so important for parents to be aware of what they're child is doing online.
"It's important for parents to have a look at the actual screen time and that's what internet safety is all about, it's about trying to educate the girls to help them make good choices and to recognise the dangers that they could potentially face."
