Monaghan records sharpest rise in spending at service stations

Rising energy prices caused by the conflict in the Middle East are influencing spending habits here.

Co Monaghan has recorded the sharpest rise in spending over the last 12 months for expenditure at service stations.

According to the latest AIB Spend Trend this figure is up 23pc year-on-year.

The latest AIB “Spend Trend” for April found spending at service stations climbed 12pc year-on-year in April, while spending on utilities excluding telecoms increased 9pc over the same period.

Electric vehicle charging spend also rose 9pc compared with March, with the figures pointing to motorists increasingly feeling the impact of higher energy costs amid ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

The data, which was compiled from 77 million card transactions carried out by AIB customers during April, also showed airline spending fell 8pc compared with the same month last year.

Business Editor Joe Lynam says this comes from an analysis of 77 million card transactions in April:
