A local councillor is calling for greater investment in early intervention mental health supports across Monaghan.
According to Cllr Bronagh McAree, this includes youth services, family supports and access to school counselling.
The Sinn Fein representative warned that Monaghan’s suicide rate is almost double the national average at 15.5 per 100,000 people.
Nationally there are over 12,000 presentations for self-harm every year.
While Cllr McAree is aware that this is a difficult topic, she believes it is one that must be discussed.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr McAree believes mental health cannot continue to be treated only at crisis point.
She also raised her concerns that too many people are still being forced to rely on charities for support instead of receiving timely treatment through properly funded public services:
Cllr McAree told Northern Sound: "Mental health must be treated with the same urgency, seriousness and investment as physical health issues. Monaghan deserves better, and early intervention must become a priority."
