A temporary traffic trial and accompanying public survey at the Fane River Bridge was carried out, though negative feedback meant it was ended earlier than planned.
The trial was to determine whether a signal-controlled shuttle system on the existing bridge could improve safety for people who are walking or cycling by reallocating road.
The question was put to Monaghan County Council by Cllr Noel Keelan.
He asked 'what was the outcome of the Inniskeen Fane Bridge trial and Survey and what efforts are been made by Monaghan County Council to progress this proposed pedestrian and cycle bridge project in the Village?'
Monaghan County Council found the system was technically feasible from an engineering and traffic-flow perspective.
However, the trial generated significant negative feedback from the local community and was ended earlier than planned.
The council noted that any future proposal for a permanent shuttle system would likely face similar levels of objection.
Despite this, work is continuing on long-term solutions through the Inniskeen Village Plan.
Engagement with the National Transport Authority is ongoing, including consideration of alternative options such as a dedicated pedestrian and cycle bridge, subject to feasibility and public support.
