A number of submissions have been lodged in relation to proposed works at Kingscourt Railway Station.
Whilst most are welcoming the works, safety concerns regarding the meeting of the greenway with the main road are also outlined. The proposed works seek to build a new public car park at the Lakelands Greenway site. This includes 2 new kiosks for bike service and rental, gazebo structures with seating areas, new access roadway, footpaths and signage. The proposed car park would consist of 50 spaces, and new pedestrian warning lights are also set to be installed on the approach to the area where the greenway meets the main road. Submissions for the development closed earlier last month, with a total of 3 submissions lodged. One of these was from the Cavan Older People's Council, who say that Age Friendly Spaces should also be included in the car park to aid accessibility. They also recommend that signage be installed to point people to nearby amenities such as toilets, shops, and that proposed seating also be wheelchair friendly. Another submission by the Navan Cycling Initiative welcomed the proposed works but did highlight concerns regarding the greenways meeting with the main road. They ask for clarification whether an actual crossing is due to be installed or just warning lights, recommending that ramps also be installed to slow traffic on the approach. The local cycling group also recommend that the signage be changed to "Boyne Valley to Lakelands Greenway". Finally, they point out the lack of toilet facilities, and the current lack of signage directing people to places such as Dún a Rí Forest Park and Kingscourt Town. The third submission lodged by a local resident calls for the installation of a bus stop nearby. They say that it is unrealistic to expect visitors arriving by bus to backtrack the considerable distance to/from Kingscourt’s Main Street when the bus goes by the railway station anyway.
The local planning authority will now review the submissions and a decision will be made on them in due course.
