O’Farrell family call for Garda watchdog to release report

Shane's mother Lucia O'Farrell says she's unhappy with the response to date from Fiosrú.

The family of hit-and-run victim Shane O’Farrell have asked the Garda watchdog for a date on when its report will be released.

The 23-year-old law graduate died after being being knocked down while cycling outside Carrickmacross in August of 2011, by a man who was a repeat offender on bail.

The driver of the car, Zigimantas Gridziuska, should have been in custody at the time of the killing. The Minister for Justice Jim O'Callaghan issued an public apology to the O'Farrell family in the Dáil in May of this year after years of campaigning for information surrounding the death of the young Co Monaghan man.

On May 27th, the Government admitted that there were "failures" on the part of the State in relation to the death of the 23-year-old. During that apology, Minister for Justice Jim O'Callaghan said the justice system that operated at the time exposed Shane to a threat to which he should not have been exposed to.

Shane's mother Lucia O'Farrell says she's unhappy with the response to date from Emily Logan the first Police Ombudsman in Ireland, Fiosrú formerly GSOC.

Lucia says the family still have questions that need answering and are calling on the Garda watchdog to release the report they have. Ms O'Farrell says it's paramount that this report is given to her family and if Fiosrú want public confidence in the body then the report must be released.
