Over €3 million welcomed for local group water schemes

"Today’s announcement is great news for communities in this region."

A local TD has welcomed the approval of just over €3 million to deliver essential water and waste water infrastructure in Cavan and Monaghan.

Brendan Smith was reacting to Minister James Browne's announcement today regarding a third round of funding under the multi-annual Rural Water Programme 2024-2026.

The funding provides capital investment to improve water services in rural areas. Deputy Smith said group water schemes are a critical part of our local infrastructure particularly for rural communities.

Speaking to Northern Sound, the Fianna Fail man spoke about what this means for rural areas. Welcoming the announcement, Deputy Brendan Smith said, “This funding will make a real and lasting difference to communities across Cavan and Monaghan. It reflects our ongoing commitment in Government to support rural areas, ensuring greater regional balance.

“This funding lays the groundwork for sustainable growth in both regional hubs and smaller towns a villages. As we continue to deliver on our housing commitments infrastructure like this is essential to ensure even greater housing delivery.” The investment is being made under the Rural Water Programme 2024–2026 and will significantly improve access to safe, reliable drinking water in rural areas that are not connected to the public (Uisce Éireann) network.

Deputy David Maxwell said, "today’s announcement is great news for communities in this region. It’s so important that we protect our water sources and ensure the highest standards in water treatment. “We must ensure that communities across Cavan and Monaghan have the benefit of high quality infrastructure and water services.

“The Rural Water Programme delivers improvements to private domestic water and waste water services in areas of rural Ireland where there are no public water services. “This funding and the completion of these projects will allow Group Water Schemes to continue to improve the quality, quantity and reliability of the water services across Cavan and Monaghan."
