Over half of the septic tanks inspected across the Northern Sound region last year failed their inspection.
That's according to a report released by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) this week.
Last year, there was 41 inspections required in Co. Monaghan, however there was 50 inspections completed.
According to the EPA, there was a 52% failure rate in Co. Monaghan in 2025.
The EPA also revealed, that the percentage fixed in Monaghan last year, was 89%.
Meanwhile in Co. Cavan, there was a 56% failure rate in 2025.
There was a requirement to inspect 33 septic tanks, however the EPA inspected 34.
The report highlighted, that 88% of tanks were fixed by the end of 2025.
1,466 Domestic Waste Water Treatment System (DWWTS) inspections were completed by local authorities in 2025.
59% of DWWTS failed inspection, with a significant number identified as a risk to human health and the environment.
84% of DWWTS that failed during 2013-2025 were fixed by the end of 2025.
The number of advisory notices open more than two years decreased from 523 at the end of 2024 to 442 at the end of 2025.
