Planning permission for a new five storey apartment block in Cavan has been upheld by the higher planning authority.
The new block containing 66 apartments is due to be build on the Farnham Road in Cavan Town. The 66 apartments are due to be houses in a single block, with the application also including a road bridge over the Cavan River, vehicle access, 49 new parking spaces, and a communal open space. Cavan County Council granted permission for the new apartment block subject to 39 conditions, however it was subsequently appeal.
The appeal claimed that the new block will devalue properties in the surrounding area, traffic congestion from nearby new developments, and that it will undermine Brookvale House as a protected structure. They also cite that the removal of trees from the site is "environmental vandalism". The developers responded to this appeal saying that it comprises a number of statements that are entirely unsupported by evidence and that a number of reports show that the development wouldn't have an adverse affect on Brookvale House, or traffic in the area.
An Bórd Pleanála agreed, saying the new apartments align with the county development plan, and upheld Cavan County Council's decision, subject to 23 conditions. including that the developers pay a special contribution of €20,000]
