A planning application has been submitted for the development of a renewable biogas plant in Maghernakelly in Drum, Co. Monaghan.
The application was submitted by Stream BioEnergy Ireland Limited to Monaghan County Council in recent weeks (Wedenesday, December 10th).
According to Monaghan County Council, a decision on the proposed development is due on Tuesday, February 3rd.
The proposed development will consist of a 10-year permission for a Renewable Biogas Plant and associated road improvements, on a site of approximately 6.2 hectares located immediately west of the R189 Road and south of the L2280 Road, on lands in the townlands of Maghernakelly and Drumcall, Co. Monaghan.
The proposed plant will generate renewable biogas from 99,000 tonnes per annum of poultry manure, along with other biodegradable agricultural and agri-food organic materials, utilising anaerobic digestion technology.
The development will consist of buildings and associated structures, including an admin building, the main processing building, with an odour control system, and associated dispersion stack.
It will also consist of a bunded tank farm, a C02 liquefaction plant, provision for 35 car parking spaces, local road improvement works, and all ancillary site development works and services.
An environmental impact assessment report was submitted to the planning authority with the application.
Stream BioEnergy also owns and operates the Tully Biogas plant in Ballymena, Northern Ireland.
This plant processes 40,000 tonnes per annum of chicken litter, and in doing so produces 3MW of renewable electricity, enough to power 6,000 homes.
It is one of the first facilities in the world to use chicken litter as a sole feedstock at this scale and has been operating successfully since 2017.
