This week, a Co Cavan man will be taking on the challenge of climbing to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in a bid to raise funds for the Alzheimer Society of Ireland.
Patrick McMahon who is originally from Redhills has been living in Manchester for the past 18 years with his wife and two children will fly out to Tanzania this Wednesday.
In relation to the challenge, the Redhills man said this is a cause close to his heart as it is in honour of his mother Bernie and to everyone affected by Alzheimer's.
Patrick's mother Bernie was a nurse for over 40 years and gave her life to looking after people.
She was diagnosed with Alzheimer's seven years ago and now receives fulltime care at home.
Patrick says every penny raised through this challenge will go directly to the Alzheimer Society of Ireland to help support the vital work that they do.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Patrick thanked the local community for the support his fundraising initiative has received so far.
Patrick told Northern Sound: "Following on from raising over £2,500 in 2023 by completing the Chester and Dublin Marathons, I’d love to add to that. My trip is completely self-funded, so every penny you donate will go directly to this fantastic charity and the vital work they do.
"I know it’s not a great time of year to fundraise but if you can, any donation would be gratefully received. My original target was £500 but due to your generous donations, I increased it to an ambitious £3,000 and it has now surpassed that. It shows the deep impact this disease has on so many. Your generosity will help provide care, research, and hope for those living with Alzheimer’s."
