The decision to send the Mercosur trade deal to the European Court of Justice for review has been described locally as a "victory for common sense."
Earlier this week the European Parliament voted to refer the EU-Mercosur trade agreement to the European Court.
The closely contested vote in Strasbourg will now significantly delay the agreement and place its legal foundations under formal scrutiny by the Court.
Co Cavan councillor Shane P O'Reilly described the development as a "significant victory" for right minded MEPs, the farming industry and those who are opposed to the Mercosur deal "like himself."
