Road safety at 'crisis point' in Monaghan

Monaghan County Council is finalising its 5-year Road Safety plan in line with national guidance.

Co Monaghan is at "crisis point" when it comes to road safety.

That's according to Fine Gael councillor Pauric Clerkin.

Cllr Clerkin says despite years of public education, awareness, enforcement and campaigns, road safety still remains a major issue.

According to the local representative, driving while under the influence is still a major issue as it greatly impairs someone's reaction time and their ability to drive in a safe and responsible manner.

It was was announced this week that Monaghan County Council is finalising its 5-year Road Safety plan in line with national guidance.

The plan will be finalised in Q2 2026 and presented to the members thereafter.

The 'Road Safety Working Together group'  involves representatives from the Garda, Fire Service, Ambulance Service, RSA and Monaghan County Council.

Cllr Clerkin who sits on the Transport SPC welcomed the news and has called on local people to have their say on possible safety methods that could be added to the plan.

Cllr Clerki also highlighted that he has seen a significant increase in the number of people who drive while using their mobile phones.

Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr Clerkin said all of these actions can have devasting consequences, adding that many older drivers no longer feel safe on the roads:
