A local Senator has raised concerns that the special school in Monaghan is an "interim" facility.
Speaking in the Seanad this week, Senator Robbie Gallagher said that the Department of Education must "not lose track" of the need for a permanent special school.
The Minister for Education, Hildegarde Naughton told the senator that she is engaging with officials about the provision of future special schools and special classes right across the country, including in Monaghan.
Senator Gallagher told Northern Sound that a search for a permanent site for the special school is underway.
He said: "The first thing we're going to have to identify is a site. Perhaps, that site could be in state ownership already, therefore there would be no cost implication to finding a site.
"The Minister did say that the purchase of a site could be a possibility as well.
"The trail of the county to find a suitable site can now get underway. The next step, once you identify a site, and once you take ownership of that site, you then move on to drawing up drawings, and subsequently looking for planning permission. So, there is a process to go through there," he added.
