The Department of Transport has announced €360 million nationally in funding for Active Travel and Greenways in 2026.
This includes funding of €3.25 million for Co. Cavan, and €6.8 million for Co. Monaghan.
The investment is dedicated to the development of walking and cycling projects that offer safe, sustainable and healthy transport options to communities around the country.
This funding will enable almost 1,000 projects of varying scale to progress in 2026.
€62 million has been allocated to deliver Greenway projects across Ireland, including the extension of the Ulster Canal Greenway in Monaghan.
Local senator Robbie Gallagher has welcomed the news.
Speaking to Northern Sound, he said that the idea behind the funding is to encourage people to use cycleways to go about their business.
Senator Gallagher: "Over 10.25 million on its way to Cavan and Monaghan, to do with greenways and active travel projects.
"In Monaghan the figure is noteworthy, mainly because of the €3 million allocated towards the extension of the Greenway in Monaghan town, to the border with Northern Ireland with Middletown.
"That is very much welcomed, we've been working on it for quite some time. That project, we're hoping, will start in September of this year," Senator Gallagher added.
