Significant fish kill like that recorded over recent days in the region is "totally unacceptable."
That's according to Éamonn Ross from the Lough Sheelin Trout Protection Association.
His comments come after an investigation was launched over a fish kill at Lough Sheelin, Co Cavan.
According to Inland Fisheries Ireland, at least 68 fish have died, most of which were large wild brown trout across Captain's Bay, Lough Sheelin and a circa two kilometre stretch of the Mountnugent River.
In a separate incident, more than 1,000 fish mortalities were recorded at Ballinagh River earlier in the week.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Éamonn Ross said it should not be acceptable that fish can die in conditions like this.
As a result, he has appealed to the public to play its part when it comes to preventing situations like this from occurring again, adding that "we all have a part to play."
He had this advice for locals:
