A local TD has called for additional funding to be given to local authorities for the non-national road network in 2026.
Deputy Brendan Smith raised the issue last week, after severe damage was caused to roads due to consistently heavy rainfall.
The Minister for Transport highlighted that Cavan was allocated €19.1 million for roads in 2026. Of this, €18.2 million has been allocated for the protection of regional and local roads.
According to the Minister, this is an increase in Cavan’s initial 2025 allocation.
He said that the government is “committed to assisting affected local authorities in the aftermath of Storm Chandra”.
The minister noted that Exchequer funding for regional and local roads is intended to supplement “realistic contributions” from local authorities’ own resources.
He advised local authorities to set aside a contingency from Department allocations and own resources for severe weather events.
