Staff at a community nursing unit in Cavan have been praised for their kind, considerate, and respectful nature.
An inspection was carried out on the Lisdarn Traditional Care Centre at Cavan General Hospital.
Lisdarn Transitional Care Centre is a rehabilitation and community inpatient healthcare service which is owned and managed by the HSE
The centre has 32 inpatient beds spread across two wards.
Patients are admitted to the centre from acute hospitals and the community for reablement care, transitional care, pre-discharge care and palliative care.
The inspection carried out by HIQA in October examined areas such as infection control, patient satisfaction, governance and patient safety.
Overall it was evident that a culture of kindness, consideration and respect was actively promoted in Lisdarn Centre.
According to the report, kind interactions between staff and patients were observed by inspectors, and staff were observed providing individualised assistance with respect and consideration.
Substantial compliances were noted in areas such as patient protection, patient satisfaction, and governance.
A partial compliance was recorded in the area of "physical environment". Inspectors found that the unit had no single room with an ensuite for those requiring isolation, signifcant wear and tear to the unit, ceiling mould in a store room, and no formal oversight to check cleaning.
However they also noted that staff were doing the best they could, considering the shortage of staff.
In its response to the report, the Centre say that a new cleaning roster was implemented post inspection and the store room was painted to remove mould.
They also say that three single rooms are prioritised for patients requiring isolation.
