Fine Gael Councillor Alan Johnston has welcomed the submission of plans for a new controlled pedestrian crossing on the Clones Road to Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) for approval.
The local representative has described this development as a significant step towards improving road safety for local residents, pedestrians and cyclists.
The proposed crossing will be located adjacent to the Ulster Canal Greenway, providing a much-needed safe crossing point for the growing number of pedestrians and cyclists using the Greenway.
It will also serve residents of the surrounding housing estates, including many schoolchildren and families who use the route on a daily basis.
Last summer, Cllr Johnston commissioned a speed survey on the Clones Road, and it confirmed that excessive speed is a serious issue on this road.
Cllr Johnston said the findings reinforced the need for traffic calming measures and improved pedestrian infrastructure.
Speaking to Northern Sound, he said this is an important investment in road safety that will benefit local residents, pedestrians, cyclists and all who use the Clones Road for many years to come.
