Cavan-Monaghan TD Brendan Smith has welcomed today's announcement by Penneys that it will open a new store in Cavan Town.
Located in Cavan Town's Main Street, the new store will occupy the existing Tesco site, which will move to a new location at Townparks.
Penneys hopes to open the new store in Spring 2028.
Deputy Brendan Smith has welcomed the announcement, stating that it will be a great opportunity for the people of Co Cavan.
When Tesco announced that it was going ahead with its new store development in the town before the new year, Deputy Smith expressed his hopes at the time that this would open up other retail opportunities in Cavan Town.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Deputy Smith said: "Penneys attracts huge business to areas where it is located and this will help keep more shoppers in Cavan as opposed to travelling urban centres. I've heard so many people over the years highlight the importance of getting Penneys Cavan and it will keep more shoppers in Cavan. I sincerely welcome this announcement and I know that other business people in the town will welcome this as well.
"It is important that we provide as much retail diversity as possible in our towns, retail is a huge employer and a huge earner for the local economy and this announcement will be of huge benefit to Cavan Town and it is welcomed news."
The store in Cavan is part of Primark's commitment to invest over €250m in Ireland over a ten-year period, which also includes the development, relocation and refurbishment of many of its existing stores across the country, including Penneys' stores in Portlaoise, Dooradoyle Limerick and Ennis later this year.
