It's understood a cabinet committee on the economy discussed the possibility of shelving minimum wage increases from January, as a way of increasing Irish competitiveness.

The Taoiseach says the tariffs issue is completely separate to domestic budgetary considerations.

The pension auto-enrolment scheme is also due to start from the end of September.
