Works on a major extension to Cavan General Hospital are expected to begin before the end of this year.
Planning was granted earlier in 2025 for the local hospital to increase inpatient bed numbers from 18 to 54. It includes a new endoscopy unit and an expanded emergency department. Health Minister Jennifer Carol MacNeill confirmed that the detailed design phase has now concluded and the tender packages are prepared to be issued for pricing. The Enabling Works package number 2 is currently on site and is expected to be complete by Q4 2025.
If permission is granted to proceed to tender, and the subsequent tender returns are within the increased capital budget allocations, the Health Minister says the works could begin before the end of Quarter 4.
