Cavan-Monaghan TD Cathy Bennett has challenged the Minister for Justice to commit to delivering spaces for women and children fleeing domestic violence in both Cavan and Monaghan.
Speaking following a Dáil debate on domestic violence, Bennett said that while the rhetoric from government is welcome, progress to date in actually delivering the needed refuge spaces has been lacklustre at best.
Deputy Bennett questioned whether it was the Minister's ambition to progress this, increase spaces and provide adequate spaces in every county.
The local TD said progress has been "lacking" since Government announced the target of doubling the number of spaces to 280 lacking.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Deputy Bennett urged Minister Jim O'Callaghan to commit to local communities and to right the wrongs of past governments to deliver adequate refuge for the women and children of both counties Cavan and Monaghan.
