A tender has been published for remediation works at a former landfill in Monaghan.
The old landfill at Killycronaghan near Smithborough ceased operation in the early 1980s. Monaghan County Council received the go-ahead for remediation works at the old Killycronaghan landfill by An Bórd Pleanála last year. The works include installing an engineered landfill capping system covering an area of 2.6 hectares. Subsurface water drainage infrastructure, passive landfill gas management including venting, a new access gate, and landscaping of the final formation of the capping area incorporating a grass mix suitable for pasture are all part of the works. A recent EPA report on the site designated it a high risk site due to risk of migration of landfill and contaminated surface water. The site is approximately 9 hectares in size and is used for agriculture currently. Anecdotal evidence suggests that landfilling on the site began in the 1970s and ceased in 1984, when the site was capped. The tender published calls for Environmental consultancy and project management services to carry out the approved works.
