Tributes paid to 'much loved' mother of two Emma Mackeral

The N2 remains closed this afternoon as forensic investigations continue at the scene.

Tributes have been paid to a Co Monaghan mother-of-two who died following at fatal road traffic collision on the N2 yesterday.

Emergency services were alerted to a collision involving a HGV and a car on the N2 at Castleblayney at approximately 8am yesterday morning.

Emma Mackeral from Clones died at the scene.

Paying tribute to the young mother of two, Cathaoirleach of the Ballybay-Clones MD Sinead Flynn said the community is "absolutely devastated."

Cllr Flynn described Emma as a much loved and highly respected person, adding that the community is in "complete shock" over this devastating news: "We're absolutely devasted to hear about the tragic accident yesterday which claimed the life of  young local mother. Emma was much loved and highly respected and the community here is in complete shock and devastation at this awful news. I want to extend my sincere condolences to Emma's husband, her two children, to both the McClean and Mackeral families and to Emma's many friends. We're thinking and praying of them at this very sad time."

Cllr Richard Truell also paid tribute following the tragic death of the local mother: "It's terrible news, especially this time of year leaving a husband and two young children. My heart goes out to Andrew, Eva and Alec and the wider family circle. We just don't know what will happen in life and it's important to cherish everyday that we have with our family."

Meanwhile, the N2 remains closed this afternoon as forensic investigations continue at the scene and diversions remain in place.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact them.

Any road users, who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were traveling on the N2 between Castleblayney and Broomfield yesterday morning are being asked to contact Gardai.
