Tributes have been paid locally following the death of former Fianna Fail councillor Mary Cunningham.
The former Clones councillor has been described by those who knew her as a “wonderful lady” who “lit up a room wherever she went.”
In a tribute posted online, one person said that Mary’s “warmth, encouragement and laughter” meant so much to everyone lucky enough to know her.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr Pat Treanor said Mary was “well known” throughout the town of Clones and was heavily involved in community activity.
Cllr Treanor said Mary was involved in “every sport going” and was an encyclopaedia of knowledge about every sport” making friends with leading sports people down through the years.
Also paying tribute to the late Mary Cunningham, Clones Town FC stated that the club was “deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our neighbour and friend, Mary Cunningham.”
The statement continued: “Mary was a truly historic lady of Clones — a community icon whose immense contribution to politics, community life, and sport leaves a lasting legacy. From her days playing Camogie in the 50s and 60s to her energetic media work promoting Ladies Football she helped bring Monaghan teams to national recognition.
“Closer to home, Mary, was a great supporter of her granddaughter Cara (U-16) at her games and a true friend of Clones Town FC, always offering encouragement beside our grounds.
“We extend our heartfelt sympathies to her daughter Paula, her son Declan, daughter-in-law Michelle (U-16), and her much-loved granddaughters Cara (U-16) and Áine, along with the wider Cunningham and McCabe families and her many friends at this difficult time.”
Mary’s funeral mass will take place at the Sacred Heart Church, Clones for 11am on Wednesday. Burial afterwards in Mount St Oliver's Cemetery.
