Trump a 'smiling assassin' during Taoiseach meeting

Trump was like a smiling assassin commending Ireland for its American investment, but also said those days are over.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin continues his visit to Washington DC today with a number of meetings focused on trade. It comes after political engagements yesterday with the US administration.

Political Correspondent Seán Defoe reports: "As the dust settles on a fifty minute Oval Office performance, the opinion on whether or not Micheál Martin did a good job depends on how high your expectations had been heading into it.

"On one level, he survived without any massive disaster or misstep and given the last appearance in the Oval was the Volodymyr Zelenskyy fiasco, that’s an achievement in itself. On the other hand, he was quiet on Gaza, didn’t say a thing to defend the EU from a pummeling and when he did pipe up to address the trade imbalance Donald Trump dismissed much of what he said.

"Trump himself was like a smiling assassin – saying he was impressed by how Ireland had accumulated so much American investment, but also saying those days are over.

"After politics yesterday trade is the focus today with a number of meetings on the cards for Micheál Martin before he attends the swanky, $1,000 a plate Ireland Funds charity dinner this evening."
