A planned upgrade has been confirmed for the Ballybay Wastewater Treatment Plant.
Cathaoirleach of the Ballybay-Clones MD Sinead Flynn described this as a positive and much-needed investment for Ballybay.
Cllr Flynn says these upgrades are vital to protect local rivers and waterways as the existing plant is not currently meeting its required discharge standards.
The Sinn Fein representative believes these upgrades will also ensure that the local environment is properly safeguarded for future generations.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr Flynn said: "This project demonstrates how cross-border projects and cooperation can deliver real, practical benefits for local communities. Crucially, this upgrade has the potential to increase wastewater treatment capacity, which is essential to supporting housing delivery and development across the Ballybay–Clones Municipal District.
"At present, Ballybay, Clones and Newbliss are all classified within the AMBER category for available capacity, which has restricted development in these areas. This investment is therefore particularly welcome, as it can help to unlock capacity and support much-needed housing growth across the area."
