Local land and property owners dealing with drainage issues are being encouraged to contact Monaghan County Council to avoid being held responsible for any potential road traffic incidents.
Cllr Sean Gilliland said serious issues with drainage on roads across the Ballybay and Clones area was "evident" during the recent cold spell.
As temperatures plummeted, Cllr Gilliland said you could see nearly an inch of ice where water had ran out from laneways, gateways and land and had formed a sheet of ice.
According to the Fine Gael representative, the responsibility unfortunately lies with the landowner if an accident occurs as a result.
He confirmed that when the local authority tends to roads, workers will drain both sides of the road, despite this, he says there are roads in good condition yet there is still drainage issues on them.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr Gilliland has urged all property and land owners who have water running out onto roads to make contact with Monaghan County Council who can help deal with this issue: "It can end up in court if no action is taken but to mitigate that if they have issue with water coming out on the road contact the local authority and the local authority will assist in solving the issue along with the property or land owner."
