A Cavan senator has called for funding to be allocated to ensure every house has a working smoke alarm.
A recent fire in his own home prompted Fianna Fáil Senator Diarmuid Wilson to bring the issue before the Seanad earlier.
He was woken by his smoke alarms going off, and found the utility room fully alight.
Swift action from Cavan and Belturbet fire crews saved the house and the lives of him and his family.
According to Senator Wilson, regulations don't provide for homes built prior to 1997 to have smoke alarms.
Speaking in the Seanad earlier today, he says smoke alarms save lives, and called for a public awareness campaign to run continuously, not just for one week a year.
