Cavan progress to All-Ireland preliminary quarter-final despite defeat

Mayo fall to Donegal and fall out of championship

Cavan fell to a 13 point defeat at the hands of Tyrone in this afternoons clash in Brewster Park, Enniskillen.

Cormac O’Reilly scored two points in the opening minutes to keep Cavan in touch; as the sides drew level at two points apiece after nine minutes of play.

That was as close as it got for Cavan. Niall Morgan knocked over a two pointer which was the first of many scores for Tyrone as they moved into a seven point lead.

Paddy Lynch got the Cavan scoreboard ticking as Darren McCurry tormented the Cavan defence. Kieran McGeary also getting in on the scoring as Tyrone led by nine points at half-time, 0-17 to 0-11.

Paddy Lynch registered a two pointer early in the second-half and Oisin Brady followed suit as Cavan attempted to utilize the breeze.

However, Tyrone remained in control. Darren McCurry ran riot, with Darragh Canavan joining in on the act as Tyrone’s lead stretched to 13 points.

Paddy Lynch added to Cavan’s tally but unfortunately it was too little too late. Tyrone were victorious winning out 31 points to 18.

Donegal’s last gasp victory over Mayo in Dr. Hyde Park was enough to see Cavan progress to the preliminary quarter-finals as Mayo crashed out of this year’s Championship.
