Extra-time was needed as Scotstown retained the Monaghan SFC title as they beat Iniskeen by five points in Clones.
It was the reigning champions that got things underway as they kicked the first two scores of the day. Andrew Woods pulled one back from the free-kick before a fine two-pointer from Jack McCarron opened up a gap for the Scotstown men.
However, Iniskeen stayed strong, and with three points in-a-row through Shane O’Connor and a pair from Sean Jones managed to bring back within one.
There was a sucker-punch for Inniskeen just before the break. However, as Tommy Mallen converted three points, including a two-pointer, to open up a four-point gap at the interval.
Iniskeen started the second-half in fine scoring form with Sean and Conor Jones getting them back within a single point. From this point it was clear that Scotstown were in a game.
Rory Beggan’s first two-pointer of the day was responded to by an Andrew Woods two-pointer. Iniskeen again proving that they weren’t going anywhere.
Tommy Mallen thought he’d won it with two minutes remaining. However, Andrew Woods equalised in injury time to bring the game to extra-time.
Scotstown took a three point lead in the first half of extra time but a Sean Jones two-pointer once again dragged Iniskeen back into it with the second-half to play.
However, Iniskeen failed to score in the second-half of extra-time, and Scotstown kicked on. Shane Carey, Jack McCarron and a two-pointer from Conor McCarthy sealed Scotstown’s title for the 10th time in the last 13 seasons.
Scotstown won the Monaghan title, 22 points to 17 after extra-time.
