Three Cavan points inside the final minute clinched victory over Offaly in an entertaining clash played in Tullamore this afternoon.
Both sides traded scores in the opening minutes through Dylan Hyland and Ciaran Brady.
The opening goal of the game came Cavan’s way following a fortuitous break from a long Oisin Brady ball into the Offaly penalty area. After seven minutes Cavan led by three points.
Offaly then found the net when Aaron Leavy seen his deflected shot squirm into the Cavan net following a backdoor cut, drawing the sides level.
Dylan Hyland got his and Offaly’s second two pointer of the day as Ryan O Donohue replied for Cavan.
Darragh Flynn (2P), Dylan Hyland and Ciaran Murphy all used the aid of a strong breeze to extend the home sides lead out to six points with 21 minutes played.
Gearoid McKiernan got Cavan’s first score 13 minutes before Tiarnan Madden, Oisin Brady and Peter Corrigan all chipped in with a point. The hosts lead was cut to two.
Offaly took a two point lead to the break, leading 1-9 to 1-7 at half time.
Dara McVeety registered a two pointer straight from the throw in, drawing the side’s level. Jordan Hayes and Dylan Hyland both scored points for Offaly, before Diarmuid Egan got Offaly’s second goal after 45 minutes.
Offaly relegated to division three
Cavan replied instantly with another long ball in from Ryan Donohoe causing problems. Donohoe found its way to the Offaly net in this process, as a Tiarnan Madden point then drew the side’s level again.
Jack McEvoy hit Offaly’s third goal of the day on 66 minutes. Offaly looked to seal the victory and claim their first win of the campaign.
A late two point effort from Ryan Donohue along with an Emmanuel Shehu effort; saw Cavan claim victory and relegate Offaly in the process.
