Louth dented Cavan’s Allianz League momentum as Louth dominated their meeting in Kingspan Breffni.
After a level beginning to proceedings, Tadhg McDonnell’s seventh minute two-pointer gave Louth the lead for the first time.
A lead they would not go on to lose. They found themselves seven points ahead before Gerry Smith broke the visitors scoring spree.
The sides went score for score before Ciaran Downey got in on the end of a Ryan Burns through ball before finishing it soccer-style for Louth just shy of the half-hour mark.
It didn’t improve much for Cavan as two-pointers from Sam Mulroy and Paul Mathews seen Cavan trailing by 13 points at the interval.
The second-half performance did improve for Cavan but not enough to lay a glove on Louth who were now in cruise control.
Ciaran Brady made an instant impact as he found the back of the Louth net with his first touch, which sparked a mini Cavan revival mid-way through the second-half.
A pair of Gearoid McKiernan points followed by a second of the day for Cian Shekleton saw Cavan end the game with a flourish.
However, Louth kept the scoreboard ticking over, and kept their hosts at arm’s length to seal their third win of this season’s Allianz League.
Louth winning out by 10-points, 1-22 to 1-12. Cavan now have claimed just two points from their five Allianz league division two games.
