Dublin will host the 2020 European Cross Country championship at the National Sports Campus in Abbotstown.
Athletics Ireland today secured the hosting of the European Cross Country Championships for the second time, having last hosted the event in 2009.
The European Cross Country Championships will take place at the National Sports Campus on Sunday 13th December 2020. Members of the bid committee presented to the European Athletics Council in
Athletics Ireland bid for this championship was supported by Fingal County Council, Sport Ireland and RTÉ. RTÉ’s involvement is required as television broadcast partners by European athletics in making any bid.
Athletics Ireland previously hosted a very successful European Cross Championships in Santry Demesne in 2009. This is the park behind the national athletics stadium in Dublin.
Dublin 2009 was the most successfully attended European Cross Country in many years, gaining 5,000 attendee’s into the park.
However the national sports campus is logistically more difficult to attend with a limited amount of parking and bus routes.
Santry Demense is within three miles of Dublin airport and sits within five miles of Dublin city centre.
The national cross country course in Abbotstown was opened in 2016, having been part of a failed bid to host the 2017 European cross country.
