Irish Sport Impacted by Updated Covid-19 Guidelines

Irish sports bodies are responding to the announcement from An Taoiseach Leo Vardarkar regarding Covid-19.

The Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has recommended that all indoor gatherings of more than 100 people and outdoor of more than 500 people do not take place because until March 29.

The GAA have advised Shannonside Northern Sound they will be making a statement shortly regarding fixtures. They will be following advice from the HSE and department of health.

The IRFU have advised Shannonside Northern Sound they will make a statement later today in relation to all club and domestic rugby after meeting with officials from the department of health and the HSE.

The Football Association of Ireland will make an announcement on plans for all footballing activities under its jurisdiction after a meeting with Government, Department of Health officials and other national sporting bodies this afternoon.

“The LGFA have have cancelled their O’Connor Cup Championships, in a statement the LGFA said, In line with the Government announcement on Covid 19, the Higher Education Committee is cancelling the 2020 O’Connor Cup Championships in Kerry, effective immediately.

We understand that this decision will result in disappointment, especially amongst players and their backroom teams, especially when we are so close to concluding our championships but this is the right thing to do.

Our responsibility now is to ensure that we look after each other, our families and friends and that we all return to the playing fields when the time is right to do so. Donal Barry – Chairperson”
