DEADLINE PASSED: Have your say on the sale of the Anglo Celt

The deadline has just passed for public submissions on the proposed media merger between Celtic Media and Independent News and Media.

Communications Minister Denis Naughten asked the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland to carry out a review of a proposed media merger after it got the go ahead from the Competition Commissioner late last year.

Celtic Media owns seven regional newspapers including the Anglo-Celt, Meath Chronicle and the Westmeath Examiner.

The BAI has been given 80 days to examine if the takeover would be damaging to the plurality of media in Ireland, given that INM already owns a number of local newspapers.

Last week an Oireachtas committee heard of the perilous financial situation local newspapers find themselves in, with Celtic Media’s CEO Frank Mulrennan pleaded for the deal to be approved.
