764 more people have tested positive for Covid-19 in the Republic and four more patients have died.

It's the largest number of new infections confirmed here in over six weeks.

Locally, Cavan today reported 14 new Covid cases, with another eight in Monaghan. Both counties have seen increasing numbers of cases reported in recent days.

The Chief Medical Officer says the infection rate among those aged 19-44 has doubled in the last nine days.

Dr Tony Holohan is urging anyone who's been socialising this weekend to stay away from the elderly at Christmas.

There are 284 new cases in Dublin, 70 in Limerick, 52 in Donegal, 44 in Cork and 37 in Wexford -- though Offaly recorded no new infections in the last 24 hours.

Meanwhile, the Northern Ireland Executive is to meet at nine o'clock tonight.

The North is due to go into lockdown on Stephen's Day, including an 8pm curfew.

It comes as 505 new cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed there today, as well as 13 further deaths.

There are 421 people with the virus in the North's hospitals. 30 patients are currently in ICU.
