Lecture in Cavan tonight to mark 100 years since first Dáil sitting

A lecture to mark the centenary of the first Dáil is taking place in Cavan tonight. January 21st marks 100 years since the Mansion House in Dublin held the first meeting of the Dáil.

It also marks the start of the War of Independence, with the first shots fired on that day. The lecture takes place in Johnston Central Library at 6pm.

This evening’s talk will focus on the milestone 1918 election and the setting up of the Dáil, as well as how the results were received abroad. Historian Dr Darragh Gannon from Monaghan will deliver tonight’s lecture. He says events had an impact on the work of the first Dáil:
