Leona Maguire has won a Ladies European Tour card for next season after dramatically clinching fifth place at qualifying school in Morocco.
Maguire made a 15-foot birdie putt on the first extra hole to beat Sweden’s Sarah Nillson in a playoff for the last full card at the Ladies European Tour’s Lalla Aicha Tour School in Morocco.
The Cavan woman started the day fourth in a tie for sixth but needed to finish in the top five to secure the highest level card available (5c) for the 2019 tour.
As England’s Bronte Law, who finished 26-under-par, and Swede Linnea Strom (-25) streaked away at the top of the field, Maguire ended up in a battle with Sarah Nilsson for the fifth.
Maguire hit five birdies in a flawless 67 to reach 13 under par but Nilsson birdied the par five 18th to force a play-off.
On the play-off 18th the former amateur World No 1 showed great composure to hole a putt from 15 feet and book a seat at the elite pro table next year.
